How to view homes

Buying a home has been compared to falling in love – with similar risks and rewards.  It is very easy to become charmed and infatuated with a house and see only the things you like – especially if you are a first time homebuyer.

With each home that you view, you may find it useful to record what you liked and didn’t like about each house.  Of even greater importance, though, is to inform your real estate agent of exactly what you like and do not like about the house.  This will enable your agent to find better matches in the future.  This is a good practice for listings your agent sends to you on the Internet as well – the more information you give your agent the better your agent will be able to find the home that meets your needs.

Even ugly flooring can be replaced – though at a price.Try to be open when viewing each house.  Think first about what you do like, and then concentrate on what you do not.  In terms of the bad, try not to pay as much attention to paint color, draperies, and other items that you can easily change.  Even ugly flooring can be replaced – though at a price.

On some occasions, you will find something about the house that you immediately do not like and quickly removes it from consideration.  If this occurs, there is nothing wrong with leaving the house as quickly as you entered.

Remember that if you do like a house to spend some time looking in areas that receive less attention than the kitchens and the bathrooms.  Look in the closets – does the house have enough storage space for you?  Look at the plumbing and electric, most likely in the garage.  What work will you want to do before moving in?  Sometimes a house will appear to have a lot of potential – requiring only a few upgrades.  However, after the cost of the upgrades has been added, you may realize that you can find a house already renovated for the same price.

Overall, remember that searching for a house should not be a stressful experience.  It is the job of a good real estate agent to make the process as easy and painless as possible.

If you find yourself becoming frustrated or stressed about the search, let your agent know so she can correct any issues.  On the contrary, the house hunt should be a lot of fun as you make a choice that will improve your everyday life.
